Audience research and analysis

I turn analytics and research into insights and recommendations you can immediately deploy.
From a Cambridge PhD highlighting an unknown area of criminal justice to founding an internet consultancy helping rights holders understand the impact of internet piracy to running the global research strategy for the recorded music industry and creating an in-house research agency, I have continually utilised my data and insights knowledge to bolster the work of others.
I am your go-to advisor for complex problem-solving, nuanced data analysis, and the connection of insights to broader industry, social, and cultural contexts.
Drop me a line below and let’s discuss how I might help.
What can I provide?
01
Audience studies
Having helmed audience research ranging from the largest music-focused consumer study globally to a forty-person audience community in Nigeria, no research study is too large or too small.
I can provide any or all aspects of the audience research process: from advisory services through to scoping and planning to panel selection, fieldwork, data verification, analysis, reporting, and visualisations.

I created and rapidly scaled IFPI’s consumer research capabilities, creating an in-house research agency which provided national groups and record companies with key knowledge and understanding.
02
Research and analysis
Investigating a difficult issue and uncovering new findings which will aid a client is my favourite activity. A few examples…
Discovering new trends in global revenue data for the recorded music industry while producing IFPI’s Global Music Report. I was the sole author of the GMR’s analysis for three years.

Examining the real-world impact of litigation upon the popularity and usage of illegal sites and the surrounding piracy ecosystem before and after the imposition of ISP-level site blocking.
Producing a major public study that was the first project to size the landscape of unlicensed content distribution and consumption – using a series of original methodologies – and was subsequently employed by rights holders for successful content protection campaigns.
03
Analytics ➡️ Insights
I will take your data – structured, unstructured, clean, messy – and translate the material into clear analytics using the right data tools.
Through conversations and research to understand your subject domain and specific needs, I will produce impactful analysis and insights.

Employing relevant technologies, I’ll translate those insights into reporting, visualisations, and recommendations which provide immediate impact and allow rapid deployment.
04
Expert witness work
Over two decades, I have acted as an expert witness and written affidavits for successful litigation in many countries, including the UK, Ireland, Finland, Bulgaria, and Canada.
I created original and rigorous research methodologies which formed the analysis backbone of litigation, including:
+ demonstrating the level of infringing content hosted on bittorrent, cyberlocker, stream ripping, and other piracy-focused sites
+ calculating unlicensed site revenues to demonstrate profit levels
I have successfully identified the owners and administrators of many major unlicensed piracy portals, leading to site closures, piracy group disruption, arrests, and law enforcement investigations.
About me
I led IFPI’s Global Insight and Analysis team, transforming the organisation’s research and analytics capabilities. I delivered IFPI’s influential Global Music Report, giving industry experts, C-suite execs, investment banks, and policymakers the data and analysis required to understand the rapidly changing music industry.
I created and rapidly scaled IFPI’s global consumer analytics function, along the way leading the world’s largest music-focused consumer study across 26 countries with over 44,000 respondents. Analysis from this project drove commercial and marketing strategy, provoking major changes in listener outreach. I’ve been in charge of projects that deep-dived into audience engagement in China, India, Nigeria, UK, LATAM, Sweden, and Indonesia and explored dedicated topics such as the rise of short form video, the impact of smartphone adoption, barriers to licensed service adoption, and
Prior to IFPI, I founded and grew a digital distribution and internet piracy consultancy with a lean team at Envisional/NetNames. I built client relationships with major rights holders and pioneered research and data methodologies that became industry standards. I’m not shy to say I remain a world expert in internet piracy.
